It’s my third year working here at Thorpe & Brown Jewellers, and looking back to when I first started I can see how much knowledge I have gained on making fine jewellery. I started at T&B not having any knowledge or experience of the jewellery industry and threw myself into work alongside a part-time jewellery making course in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. It’s true they say that anyone can achieve anything if they put their mind to it and they enjoy it – much like our enthusiastic students on our Jewellery making workshops!
We have all manner of students through our doors, all of different age, and gender, and of varying creative skills. All of which come in to our shop with little or no expectation of just how well they are able to make a piece of silver jewellery – and all leave with a wonderful sense of achievement knowing they have all created something stunning from scratch!
The best part about teaching, is seeing our students’ faces at the end of the workshop day; ecstatic at the finely made silver ring, bangle, pendant that they have created with their own hands. The sense of achievement is shared throughout the whole group, and everyone leaves with a smile on their face.
When I joined T&B, I never imagined I would be busy most days at the bench, let alone teaching others to make their own jewellery.
I can see the students channelling their inner creativity, seeing their final pieces beautifully polished and already considering what they would like to make next. It’s a great experience and a really lovely way to spend a day, and feel good about yourself by learning something new!
