Turning sentimental jewellery into something new is one of the most rewarding parts of bespoke jewellery design. At our Hinckley workshop, we regularly help customers transform inherited or unworn gold into meaningful new pieces that can be treasured for generations.
Recently, a customer visited us with a gold wristwatch that held years of memories but was no longer being worn. Rather than leaving it tucked away in a drawer, they chose to recycle the gold and create two matching heart pendants for family members — preserving both the sentimental value and the story behind the piece.
In this case study, we’ll walk through the process of melting down a customer’s own gold and transforming it by hand into beautiful bespoke jewellery.
Assessing the Original Gold Wristwatch
The first step in any remodelling project is assessing the existing jewellery. We carefully examine the gold to determine:
-
The metal type and purity
-
Whether the gold is suitable for remelting
-
How much usable material is available
-
Whether any stones or components can be reused
In this case, the customer’s gold wristwatch contained enough gold to create two small heart pendants while retaining the sentimental connection to the original piece.
Using a customer’s own gold is a wonderful way to create sustainable jewellery while keeping family history alive.
Melting Down the Gold
Once the watch was dismantled and prepared, the gold was melted using a jeweller’s torch and crucible. During this stage, the metal is heated to a high temperature until it becomes molten.
The molten gold is then poured into an ingot mould to create a solid bar of reusable gold.
This stage is always special to witness — an old, unworn item beginning its transformation into something completely new.
Rolling the Gold
After cooling, the gold ingot is far too thick and uneven to work with directly. The next stage involves rolling the metal through a rolling mill.
This process gradually compresses and lengthens the gold into a workable sheet. The rolling must be done carefully in multiple stages to avoid stressing or cracking the metal.
Between rolling passes, the gold is annealed (heated and cooled) to keep it soft and workable.
Creating sheet metal by hand gives us complete control over the thickness and quality of the material before shaping begins.
Forging and Shaping the Heart Pendants
Once the gold sheet reached the desired thickness, the heart shapes were carefully marked and cut out by hand.
The pendants were then forged and refined using traditional jewellery-making techniques. Forging strengthens the metal while allowing us to create smooth curves and balanced shapes.
Every edge was shaped and adjusted by hand to ensure the two pendants matched beautifully while still retaining their own handmade character.
This part of the process takes patience and precision, especially when creating sentimental jewellery pieces designed to be worn every day.
Soldering and Finishing Details
After shaping, each pendant was soldered and refined further with detailed filing and sanding. Small imperfections were removed gradually to prepare the surface for polishing.
Attention to detail during this stage is essential for achieving a professional finish and ensuring the pendants feel smooth and comfortable when worn.
Polishing the Finished Pendants
The final stage is polishing.
Each heart pendant went through several polishing stages using specialist compounds and polishing mops to bring out the natural warmth and shine of the gold.
The finished result was two elegant heart pendants with a deep sentimental connection — transformed from a once-loved wristwatch into meaningful jewellery that can continue to be worn and cherished.
Why Customers Choose to Remodel Their Own Gold Jewellery
More customers are choosing to remodel inherited or unworn jewellery rather than purchasing new pieces. Reasons often include:
-
Preserving sentimental memories
-
Creating meaningful heirloom jewellery
-
Recycling unused gold sustainably
-
Updating outdated jewellery styles
-
Sharing inherited jewellery between family members
Whether it’s an old ring, bracelet, necklace, or watch, remodelling allows treasured materials to take on a completely new life.
