From Cufflinks to Contemporary Earrings: A Bespoke Transformation

At the heart of what we do is the belief that jewellery should evolve with the people who wear it. This recent commission is a perfect example - a thoughtful transformation of a pair of emerald cufflinks into elegant, wearable earrings.

The Starting Point

The original cufflinks featured rich green emeralds, each set into a modern rectangular mount, accented with small brilliant-cut diamonds. While beautifully made, the design was inherently masculine and intended for occasional wear. Our client wanted to honour the sentimental value of the stones while creating something more versatile and personal.

Reimagining the Design

The first step was to carefully assess the existing pieces. The emeralds themselves were full of character, with their natural inclusions and vibrant colour giving them a distinctive charm. These gemstones became the focal point of the redesign.

To make the earrings more wearable day-to-day, we opted for a simple and refined stud style. This allows the beauty of the emeralds to shine without distraction, while ensuring comfort and practicality.

The Process

Each emerald was meticulously removed from its original cufflink setting, taking great care to preserve both the stones and the surrounding metal wherever possible.

From there:

• The cufflink backs and fittings were removed and the metal was prepared for repurposing.
• New, minimal settings were crafted to suit the proportions of each emerald.
• The stones were securely re-set by hand into their new mounts.
• Finally, earring posts and butterfly fittings were added for a classic and secure finish.

Throughout the process, attention to detail was key - particularly in matching the orientation and balance of the stones so the finished earrings work beautifully as a pair.

The Finished Piece

The result is a pair of timeless emerald stud earrings: understated, elegant, and full of meaning. By simplifying the design, the rich green tones of the emeralds are brought to life, making them ideal for both everyday wear and special occasions.

A New Chapter for Existing Jewellery

This project is a wonderful example of how heirloom or underworn pieces can be reimagined into something entirely new, without losing their story. By transforming cufflinks into earrings, we were able to create a piece that feels contemporary while still carrying its original significance.
